Is this the "fair competition" praised by recent articles? If a store with dominant market share taking a 30% cut can bully developers into not passing on savings to customers on competing stores with lower fees, then competition doesn't stand a chance. https://t.co/1j8DKqU6kB

@GeraGalvez @TimSweeneyEpic It's Ubisoft's choice to sell on Steam. No one requires them to do it. You use their platform. You follow their rules. Having to follow a platforms rules does not make a monopoly.

Because it's a bogus issue that Timmy Whinny is using to stir up unnecessary drama in an attempt to attract customers to his crappy store. Steam does what everyone else does—they take 30%—and that's never been a problem for decade. Epic comes along with its pre-alpha store, brags about its 12% cut, thinking it’ll immediately attract devs and then players. When it doesn’t work: He whines, writes a check to keep things exclusive temporarily, and screams that Steam is ripping off devs. Why mentioning the Microstore ? it’s basically just a mobile app store for Xbox games.

I think the real sticking point is whether the pricing parity should even be allowed, right? Like yes, ubisoft violated their agreement. However, the agreement to parity may be a step too far. That's what the argument hinges upon, but a contract violation is still a violation. Both can be held liable, IMHO, which means nothing in antitrust court. Ultimately, that is the final decision.

He’s saying that Steam requires a 30% cut from the publisher to sell their game on their store front. If that publisher also puts the game somewhere where the cut percentage is lower (say 10%) and the publisher then wants to pass those savings to the consumer by making it then cheaper to buy, Steam then refuses to sell the game at all. If their service is so good, slight price differences shouldn’t matter right? Other store fronts try to compete one way by taking lower cuts but Steam pull stuff like this when those savings are passed to gamers.

Yes but is that the point? What if another platform just wanted to sell games for some % off and devs wanted to try that? Impossible. What if a dev was not having to pay another platform 30% but less so they could afford to sell the game cheaper? Impossible. It's about clamping you into price parity and one of the key ways another platform could compete - is on price. We aren't able to test any of these theories and that's at the heart of the matter.

Another thing Epic should explore is universal ownership. The Walled Garden Model you challenged and won against on Mobile is being challenged for the rest of the video game industry. In the future there will be multiple store fronts on every console. You'll be able to buy DLC from anywhere and have it work for your game. Why not get ahead of this and work towards universal ownership licensing? Buy on Epic, own on GoG and Steam. Why not work with the other store fronts for universal ownership. Buy on one, own on all. The industry to some extent is moving in that direction. It would be wise to capitalize on it before everyone else does. That is something gamers would actually care about. "Wait if I buy from Epic I can play on My Xbox? Hell yeah!" "If I bought the game on Xbox or PlayStation I can download it on my PC through Epic? Hell yeah." Then if I'm playing on PC through Epic, why wouldn't I then buy the DLC if it carries over to one of the other platforms? That's a too good to pass on deal. Buy from epic, own on multiple platforms. If you have this before it becomes normal, you'll have a good chunk of the market. If you wait then most will just enjoy buying things through Steam or Xbox on PC. This is also something Xbox should be pushing more of with their in ecosystem purchases that lets you play on PC and Xbox. Food for thought. Doubt many will read this, but it was fun writing it out.
