@readwithai @liambrefberinn @TimSweeneyEpic I wouldn't start with fines, but a few TV/TikTok ads or some subtle reminders on the phone to turn on kids accounts etc. Society needs to learn that this is as dangerous as beating kids.

@omarsbigsister Since the Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360 on to the Nintendo DS and onward, EVERY video game system has had parental controls. Every smart phone has parental controls. Apple calls theirs “Screen Time”. It is the fault of all parents for the past 20 years for not using it.

@ape41eth @TimSweeneyEpic Yeah, we really should be putting the responsibility of a child on the parent not on the tablet the parent gave the child. Though I think letting Apple / Google verify user IDs is MUCH better than just doing it via any surveillance company with zero regard for privacy.

Parents could override and say "even though Netflix is not kid friendly, I would enable that as exception" Bottom line: it already exists everywhere!

@SoyElCaballo1 @TimSweeneyEpic how? the internet is a large encompassing term. sure, you don’t expect full privacy when you post publicly on twitter, reddit, etc. but what about DMing people or posting on a private account? there clearly is an expectation of privacy as all services/sites have privacy policies

I know, but the whole discussion we are having is about parents not willing or able to restrict phone access. Society does not allow giving kids alcohol and if you see a parent letting a five year old drink a beer you will probably intervene. The same with beating kids. But a kid spending hours on the parent’s phone won’t trigger the same reaction. So I agree in the sense that it should be more about nudging society more into the right behavior than technical solutions.

@AutismCapital @TimSweeneyEpic I just set up my youngest kid's account at Christmas on Xbox and I know exactly what he plays and who he plays with. It works out just fine for my family.

They had under 18 accounts on Xbox but one of them couldn't change his PFP due to age so annoyed the hell out of his parents to have his age changed for it. So they let him and he promptly got suspended within a few days for an inappropriate pic lol
