I was watching The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson. In one pivotal scene, two stereotypical New Yorkers are arguing between the twin towers. One man says, “They stick all the jerks in tower one”. While this scene has aged uncomfortably due to the tragic events on September 11th, I’d argue that it aged perfectly in another way. In my mind, I’d like to consider the staff of Epic as the “jerks” in Tower One. You see, back in 2017, you introduced us to a game where anything was possible. The adventures were endless, the combat was fun and engaging, and it was genuine fun building and interacting with other players. The emotes were relevant and humorous, and the quests gave a sense of order without being too stringent. It was almost like stepping into a world where Adventure Time came to life. I felt like I had more freedom in Fortnite than GTA, a mature rated game. It was an impossible feat to accomplish, but somehow, you did it. Over the pandemic, your fanbase grew because truthfully, we had nothing to do but sit at home. You were more popular than you ever were, but I guess your staff let it get to your head. The game has not grown in methodology, combat, or engagement since the end of Chapter 2. In fact, I would argue that it’s grown weaker. For one, the medallions introduce an improper balance to the nature of combat. And secondly, the item shop truly offers nothing that enhances strategy or even aesthetic. My local dollar tree has more value than all your item shop offers since Chapter 3. The return to the OG mode looked nice on the surface, but it was a mirage to make us believe that you listened to our pleas. I have been called various slurs over GTA and Call of Duty lobbies in the past, yet your decline was when I felt the most insulted. Now, before we address the Simpsons collab, let’s address the nature of your collabs and the history. The Search For Survivors back in Chapter 1 felt like a natural collaboration because it naturally integrated online celebrities into an exciting event. However, now it seems like you half heartedly throw any brand into your game and expect us to fawn over you like a love struck stalker. You throw these characters from TV shows and movies into the game and only do the most basic surface level material with them. There is no creativity, just marketing in motion. And some days, you cannot even get that right. I was relaxing on a family cruise scrolling on Twitter, and my son happened to walk by when you masqueraded as Doja Cat and taught the whole world about rose toys. To this day he still cannot walk past a rose garden without projectile vomiting and experiencing emotional trauma. On paper, this Simpsons collaboration sounds nice. After all, both Fortnite and The Simpsons have paraded themselves as family friendly brands with a little mischief. And I can imagine Bart blowing off school or chores to play Fortnite until he’s permanently glued to the bed. But how did you introduce this collaboration? Fart jokes and catch phrases that the show retired in 1994. And the teasers lacked humor, charm, or any creativity. Like any modern Simpsons episode that is not Treehouse of Horror, you are phoning it in. But maybe that’s why this collab exists, both you and the Simpsons found common ground in delivering mediocrity and coasting on past victories. When I think about the jerk in Tower One, that’s you Fortnite. Looking down on us from a high platform and ignoring our complaints, just to count your cash and continue to slack off on giving us the game we truly desire. But when your empire crumbles, it will not be a day of mourning or remembrance. It will be a celebration of the day where the true gamers win. A day where true innovation wins over corporate recognition. And when your funeral arrives, I will be in the front row, passing out Llama cake pops as we read your eulogy - “Here lies Fortnite, a game that was dead in spirit before it was dead in popularity”.
